The GPS shows that we are driving Northeast on the Overseas Highway (US Route 1), on Indian Key Fill.  The Keys were first connected by Railroads.  Where necessary, they built up the land areas so they could build the railroad.  The railroad was later paved over to create the Overseas Highway.  Over the years, parts of the highway has been widened to handle more traffic.  Some of the original railroad bridges were replaced with modern high level bridges, eliminating the older draw-bridges.
