They run really long trains through the desolate New Mexico countryside.  Most of the "cargo" appears to be trailers from 18-wheelers.  It must be much cheaper to load the trailers onto the trains and transport them across the country, than it would be to pay for all the drivers, fuel, and maintenance that would be necessary to drive these same loads to their destinations.
