Day 100. Along Route 30, you can find this sign for the "Flight
93 Memorial". On the morning of September 11, 2001, four
commercial airliners were hijacked shortly after takeoff in a planned
attack against the United States. Two of the flights were
deliberately flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in
New York City. A third plane was flown into the Pentagon in
Arlington, Virginia. A fourth plane, Flight 93 left for San
Fransisco. At 9:28 the hijackers attacked and the plane abruptly
changed course, turning toward the nation's capital. Shortly
before 10 a.m. it was observed flying low and erratically over
southwestern Pennsylvania. At 10:03 a.m. the plane crashed into a
reclaimed strip mine at the edge of the woods in Somerset County, PA.
